CHANDIGARH, JULY 5. The Chairman of the Haryana Power Distribution Corporations, B.S. Rathee, disclosed here today that the Power Utilities were purchasing power worth about Rs.15 crores daily as against Rs.10 crores to Rs.11 crores per day earlier to meet the growing demand for power. He said that the Power Utilities had purchased power even at a rate of Rs.5.50 per unit to meet the growing demand of agriculture sector. The tubewells were being provided electricity for a minimum period of eight hours per day. The Power Utilities were supplying 650 lakh to 700 lakh units of power daily and had taken steps to ensure that all categories of consumers got supply turn by turn. While pointing out that the ongoing shortage of power was a temporary phase and all-out efforts were being made to improve the situation, he appealed to the people not to resort to agitation and vandalism and refrain from attacking the officials of the Power Utilities to reinforce their demand for power. The delayed monsoon and continued lesser inflows in the rivers had resulted in reduced canal irrigation, thus leading to acute power shortage in the northern region. The requirement of power for paddy sowing was at its peak. Those pilfering power were also responsible for the malaise and it was the honest consumers who had to bear the brunt, he said.
