Uttar Pradesh
By Our Special Correspondent
LUCKNOW, JULY 5. Quality vegetables and fruits from Uttar Pradesh would now be marketed abroad and to other states in the country in the brand name of "Nawab'' by the State Horticultural Co-operative Marketing Federation. The beginning of the new venture has been made with the marketing of mangoes grown in the State. The UP Agriculture Minister, Shivpal Singh Yadav, told newspersons here today that two mango pack houses have been made operational for the purpose-one at Rehmankhera near Lucknow and another in Saharanpur district- where mangoes grown in nearby orchards were being purchased and packed strictly maintaining international standards. Dushehri, Chausa and Langra, all the three varieties of mangoes grown in the State were being marketed under the project. The new brand was this year exported to Dubai and Malaysia and to Bangalore, Mumbai,Jaipur, Kolkata and New Delhi, Mr Yadav said. Representatives of the Chinese Government had also inspected the pack houses and given consent to the export of UP mangoes to their country, Mr Yadav added. UNI adds: Mr. Yadav added that by July 10, the newly-branded Nawab would be leaving for the Chinese ports. ``The batch consisting of 15-20 tonnes would be sent to encourage U.P. mangoes in the Chinese market,'' said the Minister adding that as a part of Mango Encouragement Programme, 2004, the state government would send officials and mango farmers to Beijing. China has approved six mango pack houses in the country, out of which two belong to U.P. Mandi Parishad. The Lucknow and Saharanpur pack houses have sold 11.40 tonnes of fruit to outside markets so far. While 10.70 tonnes of the fruit were sold in the markets of Bangalore, Mumbai, Jaipur, Kolkata and Delhi, four tonnes were marketed to Dubai and Malaysia. The Agriculture and Processed Food Production and Development Authority (APEDA) had been exploring an alternative route to China as a more viable market where the consumption of mango is estimated to be much more than that of Gulf and West Asia. Doors to the Communist market were opened last year when the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had visited China. With mango production falling this season, the APEDA has been considering exporting other fruits to the Chinese market.
