`Fourth world concept

a major issue'

KOLLAM July 5. The votary of the fourth world concept, M.P. Parameshwaran, has said that the fourth world concept has already turned into a major talking point. He was addressing a gathering here on Sunday organised by the Samakalika Padana Kendram for a discussion on his book, "Nalaamlokam: Swapnavum Yatharthyavum". He said that attempts by the Communist party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M) to merge the economical and political aspects of the emerging social set up had drawn a blank.

Interest rates hiked

The UTI Bank has announced hiking interest rates on NRE Term deposits. The assistant vice president of the bank, B. Muralidharan, informed that the new rates are 2.50 per cent for one year and above, 3.30 per cent for two years and above, 3.80 per cent for three years up to 10 years.

KSRTC employees meet

The second State conference of the pro KTUC (B) KSRTC Employees Front will be inaugurated here on July 10 by the Transport Minister, R. Balakrishna Pillai. At a press conference here today the working president of the Front, Sarathchandran Pillai, and general secretary, M. Rajan, said that the Health Minister, Kadavur Sivadasan, will deliver the keynote address.

Award distribution

The Punalur Merchants Chamber will honour the toppers in this year's SSLC and CBSE examinations from the schools in the Punalur Municipal area. The president of the Chamber, S. Nousharuddin, informed in a statement that a public function has been organised at the Rajarohini Hall in Punalur on July 10.

Honour for Malayali scientist

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM JULY 5. Vasudevan Pillai Biju, a Malayali scientist, who is now working as a Research Scientist in U.S., has been appointed Senior Scientist in the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology of Japan to work on Nanotechnology. D. Muralidharan, Professor of the Department of Zoology of the University of Kerala, who released the information in Thiruvananthapuram today described it as a unique distinction and said that Dr. Biju would take up his new assignment next month. Dr. Biju hails from Adichanalloor village, Plakkadu in Kollam.

Mass petition campaign

The CPI(M) leader, M. Vijayakumar, inaugurated in Thiruvananthapuram today the signature campaign on a mass petition which the Kerala State Retail Ration Dealers Forum proposes to submit to the Prime Minister and the Union Food Minister demanding the strengthening of the public distribution system in the State and the distribution of good quality food grain through it.

Examination date announced

The written examination for the selection of candidates for the posts of Assistant Transport Officer, Administrative Officer and Depot Engineer in the KSRTC will be held at the LBS Institute of Technology for Women at Poojappura in Thiruvananthapuram on July 10 and 11. The applicants who do not get the hall ticket till July 8 may contact the Director of the LBS Centre in Thiruvananthapuram.

Dole arrears by Onam

The Government proposes to sanction one instalment of all the welfare doles by Onam, the Finance Minister, K. Sankaranarayanan, told the Assembly today.

Responding to a calling attention motion by M.V. Govindan Master (CPI-M), the Minister said the Government's effort was to clear the dole arrears to the best of its ability. It had allocated Rs. 150 crores for the purpose in 2003-'04.

Summer special trains

The railways have extended the services of the 621/622 Bangalore-Thiruvananthapuram weekly summer special and the 647/648 Bangalore-Nagercoil weekly summer special. According to the railways, the Bangalore-Thiruvananthapuram weekly special will run from Bangalore to Thiruvananthapuram on July 11, 18, 25, August 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 and from Thriruvananthapuram side on July 12, 19, 26, August 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. The 647/648 Bangalore-Nagercoil weekly special via Madurai will operate from Bangalore on July 10, 17, 24, 31, August 7, 14, 21 and 28 and from Thiruvananthapuram on July 11, 18, 25, August 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.

Brigadier Bajwa takes charge

Bangalore July 5. Brigadier J.S. Bajwa took over as the Commander of Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area in the city today, an official release said. He has also held several important staff and command assignments, including at the Army headquarters. He has been the directing staff at the Army War College, Mhow, it said. Before assuming the command of Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area, he was the Commander of 11 Sector Rashtriya Riles in Jammu and Kashmir. Brigadier M.P. Singh, outgoing Commander, has been posted as Major General, Artillery, at the Headquarters Northern Command on promotion. PTI
