THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 5. The Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran, told the Assembly on Monday that a rehabilitation fund for the plantation sector would be set up this year. Replying to the debate on the demand for grants for Labour and Labour Welfare, the Minister said Rs. 5 crores had been earmarked for the Fund. Mr. Divakaran said that dearness allowance had been restored to workers of all plantations excluding tea plantations. Free rations and educational concessions were being given to workers of the tea plantations who had been rendered jobless on account of closure of plantations. He announced that a committee would be constituted with members of the House also as members to submit recommendations on improving the functioning of the employment exchanges. An institute of building technology would be set up to train building workers in modern methods of construction. It was expected to benefit those seeking jobs in the Gulf.
