KOCHI, JULY 5. The Kerala High Court today stayed for two months the criminal proceedings initiated before the Thrissur Judicial First Class Magistrate Court against Mammootty, cine actor and chairman of Kairali TV, and John Britas, Managing Director, Kairali TV, in a defamation case. Justice G. Sasidharan passed the stay order on a petition filed by Mr. Mammootty and Mr. Britas.The defamation case was filed by Rajaji Mathew, former AIYF national general secretary. According to him, the comments made by one Rajesh, a participant in the Ashwamedam quiz competition telecast by Kairali TV on March 10, 2004, were per se defamatory.The Magistrate Court had issued summons to Mr. Mammootty, Mr. John Britas and producers and anchor of the programme.
Restraint on IHRD
Justice Kurian Joseph has restrained the Institute of Human Resources Development (IHRD) from appointing persons provisionally or on contract basis to the posts of library assistants in its various institutions.
Reflectors on road medians
A petition was filed before the court seeking a directive to the Public Works Department and the National Highway authorities to install signboards and reflectors on dividers/medians on the roads in the State. The court adjourned to another day the hearing on the petition filed by Zakeer Hussain of Kozhikode.
Acting Chief Justice
The seniormost judge, Justice Cyriac Joseph, has been appointed the Acting Chief Justice since the Chief Justice, N. K. Sodhi, is on a long leave.
