Engineering admissions cancelled for `irregularities'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JULY 5. Anna University today announced cancellation of the admission of hundreds of students in private engineering colleges, which allegedly submitted forged SC/ST certificates, those that submitted NRI (non-resident Indian) documents suspected to be ``bogus'' and those that admitted candidates who were found ``ineligible'' according to a Supreme Court order.

In a signed statement released to the media, the Registrar listed 11 colleges which allegedly submitted forged SC/ST certificates. Five colleges were named for submitting NRI documents alleged to be ``bogus'', while 20 colleges figure on the panel of institutions which are supposed to have admitted ``ineligible students.''

The Registrar has appealed to students and parents to furnish information which can lead to the university initiating ``appropriate action'' against the colleges, as per Syndicate directions.

They should let the authorities know: Have the colleges collected any capitation fee? Have they refunded all the fees collected? Have they issued proper transfer certificates? (4) Have they returned all original certificates? Have they any role in producing forged certificates/ documents to the university?

This information, signed and with full address, should reach the Director, Student Affairs, Anna University, Chennai-600 025, within 10 days.
