K. Venkatagiri Gowda
BANGALORE, JULY 5. K. Venkatagiri Gowda, noted economist and former member of the Lok Sabha for Bangalore South, passed away here today. He was 81 and is survived by his wife. His son and daughter had predeceased him. He served as president of the Vokkaligara Sangha twice. The end came at the Kempe Gowda Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital where he had been admitted for a broken backbone, sustained in a fall at his home in Jayanagar a few days ago. Hailing from Channapatna taluk in Bangalore Rural district, Dr. Gowda was educated at the University of Mysore and became a lecturer in economics. He obtained his doctorate in monetary economics from the London School of Economics in 1956. After teaching economics at the University of Mysore, Dr. Gowda joined Bangalore University as Professor and Head of the Department of Economics in 1967. Besides being an academic who stood tall, Dr. Gowda was a prolific writer. His book on "Petro Dollars" accumulated by the oil rich Arab countries in the mid-Seventies was widely acclaimed in India and abroad. In 1991, Dr. Gowda was elected to the Lok Sabha as the BJP candidate defeating the former Chief Minister R. Gundu Rao of the Congress. But he fell out with the BJP leadership and openly admired the prime ministership of P.V. Narasimha Rao and the economic policies of the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh. The two economists were contemporaries and friends at the London School of Economics. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, has said that in the passing away of Dr. Gowda, Karnataka and the country had lost an economist of international repute. His autobiography, "Byrapattanadinda Britan- ninavarage" spoke of his genius. The former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, has said that the State and the country have become poorer with the death of Dr. Gowda, who was known for his scholarship. As an educationist, parliamentarian, and writer, Dr. Gowda treaded a path of his own. He proved to be a good social worker while leading the Vokkaligara Sangha, Mr. Deve Gowda said. The State BJP President, H.N. Ananth Kumar, the Minister for Public Works, H.D. Revanna, and the Bangalore Nirmapaka Kempegowda Kendra Samithi have mourned Dr. Gowda's death.
