CHENNAI, JULY 5. The Tambaram Taluk hospital at Chromepet today received Rs. 42.6 lakhs for improvement of its facilities, including the mortuary. Resident have been complaining that the mortuary is giving out a foul odour, apparently due to inadequate air-conditioning. The Health Minister, N. Thalavai Sundaram, announced the funds allocation during a visit to the hospital this afternoon. While residents charged that the cooling plants were not working and the mortuary was overflowing with bodies, the hospital authorities said absence of a cold storage and frequent power failures did them in. The Minister said the mortuary block would be renovated at a cost of Rs. 1.5 lakhs and a cold storage unit put up at a cost of Rs. 4 lakhs. The Minister sanctioned Rs.7 lakhs each for raising the compound walls on three sides of the building and raising the ground level of the campus as also providing slabs on the storm water drains. The hospital will also get Rs. 6.8 lakhs for repairs to the existing wards and toilets while an additional Rs. 4.3 lakhs has been earmarked for improving toilet facilities and sanitary conditions. For water supply to the campus, the existing overhead tank and pump room will be repaired at Rs. 4.7 lakhs and drinking water supply pipelines improved at a cost of Rs. 2 lakhs. The sewage and drainage lines on the campus will be renewed using Rs. 3 lakhs while the drainage collection chamber will be renovated at a cost of Rs. 2 lakhs. The improvement would be carried out by December, the Minister said. Following requests from the residents, he also promised a trauma care unit for the hospital with doctors for Neurology and Orthopaedics posted there. Mr. Sundaram was accompanied by the Social Welfare Minister, B. Valarmathi, the Director of Medical Services, N. Kalyanasundaram, and officials of the Public Works Department.
