Stamp scam: suspense over grilling of officials continues

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JULY 5. Suspense continued on Monday over the possibility of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials questioning two IPS officers of Andhra Pradesh cadre in connection with the fake stamp paper scam. Speculation was rife that the two IPS officers would appear before the CBI officers at their Sultan Bazar office here on Monday, but none had turned up till evening.

However, police sources maintained that a CBI team inquired with the Shaikpet Mandal Revenue and Sub-Registrar offices to ascertain if any of the two police officials in question had purchased immovable properties. Meanwhile, a police officer whose name is doing rounds, met a couple of senior IPS officers in Hyderabad. But, it is not known if the meetings were personal or official.

A large contingent of reporters and cameramen from print and electronic media descended on the CBI office complex here in the morning anticipating arrival of the two police officers. The entire complex premises was literally taken over by media persons while rumour mills worked overtime keeping everybody on tenterhooks.

When scribes approached the local CBI officials to ascertain if any police officer was being summoned, the latter refused to divulge anything. A senior police officer wishing anonymity said notices could have been issued to police officers with regard to the stamp scam. "But, seeking clarifications cannot be construed as slapping notice on an accused involved in a case", he remarked.
