Showroom robbers held

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JULY 5. A gang allegedly involved in committing robberies and burglaries in big showrooms of South Delhi has been busted by the South Delhi police. Five persons, including two receivers of stolen property, have been arrested and items worth Rs. 5 lakhs have been recovered from them. The police said 16 cases of robbery and burglary have been solved with their arrest.

According to the police, at least three incidents of robbers striking in the showrooms of South Extension and Defence Colony were reported in the past few days. On June 22, the robbers had tied up the guards of a showroom in South Extension and taken away Rs. 61,000 in cash and other articles. A couple of other incidents were also reported around the same time.

Following a tip-off, a police team, under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police (Defence Colony), S.K. Tomar, laid a trap on Siri Fort Road on Sunday afternoon. Three suspects, driving a Santro car, appeared on the scene around 2-15 p.m. The team tried to flag them down but they sped away towards Kamla Nehru College. Another team managed to block that road completely in time. In a bid to escape, the occupants of the car tried to flee towards the DDA forest. One of them, later identified as Hansraj, also opened fire from his .315-bore country-made revolver.

However, Constable Girish Chand and other policemen managed to overpower all three. The other two were identified as Ashok and A.V. Kamraj. At the instance of the accused, the police also arrested two receivers of the stolen property. They have been identified as Mirazuddin and Sukumar Kundu.

Apart from weapons, the police also recovered articles like 24 mobile phones, six wrist-watches, 100 pieces of readymade garments, computers, music system and some other electronic items.
