Eviction continues in two villages

By Our Staff Correspondent

MADIKERI, JULY 6. The eviction of encroachers from over 250 acres of revenue land at Chikkaluvara and Doddaluvara in Torenur Gram Panchayat in Somwarpet taluk of Kodagu, started by the district administration on Monday, is in full wing, the Assistant Commissioner, Kodagu, Nagaraj, told The Hindu on Tuesday.

Mr. Nagaraj said it could take several days before the eviction was completed. Over 100 personnel were engaged in removing the fence of the encroached land, in the presence of a strong police force, he said.

A portion of the land once housed the now defunct Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.

The unit engaged in the extraction of eucalyptus oil, distilling, and marketing 10 years ago.

The unit functioned under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

Poor management of the unit is said to have caused its closure. Some say the State Government had released land on lease to the unit.

After the lease expired in 1993, the land was taken back. Later, the area was abandoned, leaving it open for plunder and loot.

Some influential persons had encroached upon the revenue land that was identified once for construction of a mini-airport and establishing a postgraduate centre.

Police had to intervene to prevent trouble when some villagers protested against the move of the district administration on Monday.

However, there was no resistance on Tuesday.

Mr. Nagaraj said a survey was taken up to assess the exact extent of revenue land. Some people claimed to be beneficiaries under the land regularisation scheme, but it would have to be verified, he said.

The district administration had earmarked land in the villages for public cause, he said.
