Crackdown on eateries begins

By Our Staff Correspondent

Roadside vendors in Mangalore are going through a difficult time because of the outbreak of cholera in the city.

MANGALORE, JULY 6. The Health Department of the Mangalore City Corporation has launched a crackdown on the roadside eateries in Mangalore in a bid curb the spread of cholera. Six cases of cholera were reported in the city recently.

The demolition squad on Tuesday evicted five eateries at Urva, Lady Hill. The officials said that they had the "right order" to shut down the roadside eateries.

They said if the roadside eateries continued to sell food in unhygienic conditions, it would not be possible to curb the spread of the disease.

According to the corporation statistics, there are 600 pushcarts in the city selling food items. Although the Health Department had issued a notice about maintaining hygiene in these places in 2001 following the outbreak of gastro-enteritis, the orders had not been implemented. But this time the corporation was serious.

The doctors were ready to meet any eventuality after the district administration took note of the outbreak of cholera in the city. Intermittent rains and fly menace in the past two weeks had made matters worse.

The outbreak of cholera has hit the business of roadside eateries. But the hotels are reported to be implementing the measures recommended by the corporation. The corporation officials' said that such measures should become a permanent feature.
