Nationals in Hissar from Aug. 3

NEW DELHI, JULY 7. The 51st National boxing championship will be held at the Mahavir stadium at Hissar from August 3 to 8. Top boxers, excluding the Olympic qualifiers, have confirmed their participation in the annual meet. About 350 boxers from 38 affiliated states and units are expected to participate.

"We want to preserve our Athens-bound boxers for the Olympics. Any minor injury may harm the prospect of our country," said Rakesh Thakran, spokesperson of the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF).

The Olympics-bound boxers, Akhil Kumar (51kg), Diwakar Prasad (54kg), Vijender (64kg) and Jitender (81kg), are being sent to Cuba for training ahead of the Games. "In Cuba they will get proper training facilities and tough sparring partners," Mr. Thakran said.
