Akhtar named in Asia Cup squad

ISLAMABAD, JULY 7. Fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar was named in the strong 14-man Pakistan squad on Wednesday for this month's Asia Cup in Sri Lanka.

``He (Shoaib Akhtar) is fit and hopefully will play an important role in Pakistan's Asia Cup campaign,'' chief selector Wasim Bari told the Associated Press.

Akhtar joined the training camp on Monday after playing county cricket for Durham and went through a strenuous fitness test — supervised by new Pakistan coach, English-born Bob Woolmer.

Opening batsman Imran Nazir also returned to the national squad after a nine-month break dating to the South African tour of Pakistan in October 2004.

Paceman Umar Gul failed to pass the fitness test, but Bari said the lanky seamer will remain under consideration for Pakistan's future assignments.

The squad: Inzamam-ul-Haq (captain), Yousuf Youhana, Imran Farhat, Yasir Hameed, Imran Nazir, Younis Khan, Moin Khan, Abdul Razzaq, Shoaib Malik, Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan, Mohammad Sami, Shoaib Akhtar, Shabbir Ahmed, Danish Kaneria. — AP
