GSTAAD (SWITZERLAND), JULY 7. Defending champion Jiri Novak defeated Albert Montanes of Spain 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Swiss Open tennis tournament. In last year's final, Novak defeated local favourite Roger Federer. Federer won his opening-round match Tuesday, 6-1, 6-1 over German Tomas Behrend for his 13th straight victory and his 22nd in his last 23 matches.
Monaco overcomes Vliegen
Argentine wild card Juan Monaco rallied from a set down for the second straight match on Wednesday, outlasting Kristof Vliegen of Belgium 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 to become the first quarterfinalist in the Swedish Open at Bastad.
Top seeds advance
Top-seeded Vincent Spadea and No. 2 James Blake advanced on Tuesday to the second round of the rain-delayed Hall of Fame tournament at Newport.
