BANGALORE, JULY 7. The high jump pit was at the focus on the second and penultimate day of the 54th Services athletics championship. And it was there that the meet records took a beating as M. Lowrence and Alex Thomas fought inch-by-inch for honours. Lowrence, of the Indian Navy, going by his past credentials looked his confident self but then Alex Thomas after his record-breaking feat on Tuesday at the triple jump pit, looked highly charged. Both succeeded in clearing the height of 2.12 metres, thus bettering the previous mark of 2.11 metres set by Lowrence at the 2001 edition. Lowrence, having achieved it in his first attempt, was credited with the gold and the record and Army Red's Alex, who equalled the mark in his second attempt, had to settle for the silver. The day also saw the discuss record being set by Ramvir Singh of the Army Red. The burly thrower heaved the disc to a distance of 52.64 metres to set the new mark.
T.G. Ajesh of the Indian Navy blazed to his second gold with a fluent win in the 400 metres. Having pocketed the 200 metres title on Monday, Ajesh ran splendidly in the straight to win the one lap event in 46.7 seconds.
