PERAMBALUR, JULY 7. An entrepreneurship development programme will be launched this month for the men self-help groups formed in the naxal-prone blocks in the district, the Collector, D. Vivekanandan, has said. He was addressing a meeting of the co-ordination committee for SHGs here on Tuesday. He said the Government last year sanctioned 300 men SHGs in Andimadam, Sendurai and Jayamkondam blocks, where many youths had taken to violence, mainly because of lack of economic support. The objective of forming these special groups by the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Women's Development (Mahalir Thittam) was to ensure a decent livelihood for them. Mr. Vivekanandan said that for the first time, the Nehru Yuva Kendra, with its vast network of rural clubs, had been entrusted with the task of identifying the members, and so far, 234 groups had been formed. In the first phase, the members would be taught the basic entrepreneurial skills. After an assessment, the SHGs would be given revolving funds and credit. During this year, the Mahalir Thittam has formed 261 groups as against the target of 658. The District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) would hand over the drought relief works, including desilting of irrigation channels, costing Rs.1.22 crores, to the women SHGs this year, said the DRDA Project Officer, L. Raja.
