More funds to fight AIDS

NEW DELHI,
JULY 8.
Emphasising that there was a need for bold and determined efforts to tackle the problem of HIV/AIDS, the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, today announced an increase of Rs. 54 crores in the allocation for the prevention and control of the disease from Rs. 205 crores.
Presenting the Union Budget for 2004-2005, he said the rise in the allocation would be used for a range of activities, including public awareness campaigns, promotion of safe sex through the use of condoms, prevention of drug abuse, distribution of disposable syringes and improvement of surveillance through the setting up of more sentinel sites.
