Student commits suicide

HUBLI, JULY 8. Jennifer Fernandes (19), a second year nursing student at the Vigneshwara Institute of Nursing Sciences, Vijayanagar, Hubli, reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her hostel room here on Thursday.

It is said that she was abused in the classroom in front of her classmates.

The hostel inmates, on learning about the suicide, went on strike demanding that N.N. Kadabageri, who runs the institute, be arrested and did not allow her body to be removed from the hostel. They also raised slogans against the management for not providing facilities and for "harassing" the students.

They called off the strike after the police arrested Mr. Kadabageri.

Jennifer's parents arrived from Sirsi and the body was sent for autopsy to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences. The police have registered a case.
