CUDDAPAH, JULY 8. Over 150 shops in the sprawling Vivekananda complex in Proddatur town downed their shutters and took out a protest rally on Thursday afternoon against the alleged assault of a cloth merchant, Marthala Gurivi Reddy, by the Proddatur urban circle inspector, Rajasekhar Raju, who demanded discount on purchases made by him. The Proddatur Cloth Merchants Association leaders faxed a complaint to the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, seeking action against the inspector. They also complained to the Proddatur MLA, N. Varadarajulu Reddy, about the CI's highhandedness. The association leaders also complained to a steering committee in which 18 traders' associations in Proddatur were members. Some other shops nearby also downed shutters expressing support. Meanwhile, the inspector claimed that he did not assault the shop owner but chided him for his rude talk. The CI said he had purchased clothes for Rs. 1,040 and assured to pay Rs. 40 later as he fell short of cash. Gurivi Reddy spoke rudely, the inspector said and adding that he left the shop on the intervention of other shopkeepers.
