cultural contest

TIRUPATI: Vasavi Kalanikethan, a cultural body, will be organising a State-level competition on July 11 (Sunday) at Hotel Poojith Residency (opp. RTC central bus stand), as part of its eighth anniversary celebrations. The competition will be in music (traditional and film), dance (traditional, folk and film) and painting for juniors (5-12 years) and seniors (above 13). Details can be had from the secretary, B. DD programme

completes a year

TIRUPATI: The Tirupati unit of Doordarshan (DD) has successfully completed its first year of production and telecast of `Tirupatilo Eevaram' programme. It is a weekly round up of events in and around Tirupati telecast at 5.30 p.m. every Wednesday throughout the State on DD 1 and DD Sapthagiri channels and re-telecast on Thursdays at 12 noon on DD Sapthagiri. The DD station engineer, U.V.S.R.Anjaneyulu, has requested public to contact his office at Bairagipatteda or over phone numbers, 0877-224 1616 and 224 3695 for suggestions on improving the content.

DIG reviews security

TIRUPATI: The Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of Police (Anantapur range), N. Jayarama Reddy, held a review meeting with the district police officials at the police guesthouse here on Wednesday. Mr. Reddy, who visited Tirupati after assuming office, reviewed the security and crime scenario in the district at an in-camera meeting. The Superintendent of Police, V. V. Gopalakrishna, presided, while the Additional SP (Tirupati), S. Ashok Kumar, and the Deputy SP, Thimmappa, were present.

Enumeration of

sick industries

KURNOOL: The District Industries Centre will enumerate sick industries in the district as per instructions of the Government to explore ways to reopen them, according to a press release issued by the DIC manager, S. Chand Basha. The managements of sick units were asked to give information about such industries in the prescribed format on July 13 and 14 at the DIC.

Training programme

CUDDAPAH: The Community Development Cell of KSRM College of Engineering here conducted a training programme on `machine tool trade' for the youth of Krishnapuram, Yerramachupalle, Prakasampalle and Sivasandhya Nagar in Chintakommadinne mandal, according to the college Principal, K.S.N. Reddy. The workshop technicians and faculty members of mechanical, industrial and production engineering departments imparted training and certificates were given away to the trainees.

Post office

timings revised

ANANTAPUR: The working hours of Prasanthi Nilayam post office are revised as 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. with effect from June 28 to offer better service to people in general and Sri Satya Sai devotees in particular. Money transactions will be accepted from 9.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m., according to a press note.

expo opened

NELLORE: The District Collector, B. Rajasekhar, inaugurated an exhibition of traditional handicrafts and handloooms at Indira Bhavan, here on Thursday. Lepakshi Handicrafts Emporium, Guntur, arranged the expo. He said the exhibition was good as it provided an opportunity to display products belonging to different parts of the State. The 12-day exhibition of `Andhra Craft and Textiles' is mainly aimed at popularising the traditional handicrafts of Andhra Pradesh and help artisans improve their earnings.

A quiet birthday for YSR

Hyderabad: It was a quiet birthday for the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who turned 56 on Thursday. The only notable event was the personal donation of Rs. 1.50 lakhs that Dr. Reddy made on the occasion to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for implementation of the free power scheme. Some of his Cabinet colleagues marked the occasion presenting cheques to him.

In keeping with his earlier resolve to avoid any ostentation on his birthday, Dr. Reddy did not receive any visitors. He even declined to receive flowers from party MLAs or to give audience to Bishop B.P. Sugandhar and two other Bishops who came to bless him.

The Governor, S.S. Barnala, sent to a telegram to him conveying his greetings.

In the Assembly, the Speaker, K. R. Suresh Reddy, wished the Chief Minister a happy birthday on behalf of the House. TDP members struck a sour note by remarking that Dr. Reddy had given himself a birthday gift in the form of passage of the resolution on reviving the Legislative Council.

After the Assembly adjourned, Dr. Reddy left for an undisclosed resort on the city outskirts to spend with his family members.

`No plan to abolish e-tendering'

HYDERABAD: The Government has no intention to abolish e-tendering for award of works to contractors. This information was given to the Assembly during Question hour on Thursday by the Major Irrigation Minister, Ponnala Laxmaiah. He answered in the negative a question from S. Maruthi (TDP) whether the Government wanted to pre-qualify contractors for the award of works instead of e-tendering.

Answering another question, Mr. Laxmaiah said the Central Water Commission had in principle agreed to increase the dam height of the proposed Yellampalli project on the Godavari from 142 to 148 metres.

The Backward Classes Welfare Minister, V. Laxmikantha Rao, replying to a question of P. Aruna (TDP) said the Government wanted to increase the seats in Backward Classes Welfare Hostels by 10,000 this year.

Naxal couple surrenders

KARIMNAGAR: A naxalite couple, belonging to the CPI-ML Janashakthi group, surrendered before the Karimnagar range DIG, S.A. Sattar in the presence of the Superintendent of Police, Rajiv Ratan and the OSD, Vikram Singh Mann, here on Thursday.

The surrendered naxalite, Ch. Upender alias Santosh, was the Janashakthi Bhupalapalli Madhu dalam deputy commander. He joined the Communist Party of United States of India (CPUSI) group of naxalites in 2001. He was arrested in 2002 and after securing bail he again joined the CPUSI.

Six months ago, he joined the Janashakthi group and worked as deputy commander. He was involved in assaulting of local leaders.

The other surrendered naxal, P. Laxmi, belongs to Adavi Mutharam mandal. She was involved in the exchange of fire with the police in Gadchirowli in Maharashtra State.

Health official denies charges

NALGONDA: Controversy surrounds the death of eight persons, including four children, and hospitalisation of others in the district.

While the bereaved family members are alleging that they died after being administered anti-fileria tablets on June 26, the Medical Department has refuted the charges arguing that they died due to other ailments.

The deaths were reported from Miryalaguda, Tungaturthy, Penpahad, Atmakur (S), Huzurnagar and Rajapet mandals. Hundreds of school children of Paarupalli village in Aliar mandal reportedly hospitalised after taking the tablets.

However, the District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO), Ramesh Chandra, refuted the allegation that the tablets had not been administered according to the weight and age of people.

4 farmers end lives

VIJAYAWADA: Two more farmers committed suicide under Nuzivid sub-division in Krishna district last night.

A farmer, N. Nageswara Rao (50), committed suicide by consuming pesticide at his house in Rangayyapeta of Bapulapadu mandal near Hanuman junction. He reportedly took the extreme step unable to repay mounting debts. He is survived by wife, three daughters and a son.

Another farmer, P. Dharmaiah (64) of Ellapruam village in Musunur mandal consumed pesticide.

Dharmaiah was declared brought dead to hospital.

NALGONDA: Two farmers ended their lives due to mounting debts in the district last night.

According to the information reaching here, Bodige Narasimha of Brahmana Vellemala in Narketpally mandal and Pedda Yella Reddy of Peraram in Bommala Ramaram mandal consumed pesticide and died.
