PUDUKOTTAI, JULY 8. The district has topped in the State in disbursement of revolving funds and economic assistance loans to women self-help groups through cooperative banks. Stating this during a `bankers orientation programme,' organised by `Mahalir Thittam' here on Wednesday, the Collector, Jatindranath Swain, said that out of 6,619 SHGs functioning in the district, a sum of Rs. 8.65 crores was disbursed as revolving fund and economic assistance loans to as many as 1,962 groups. Loans were provided to 4,129 SHGs. Steps should be taken to sanction loans to other groups also. He called upon the bankers to grant loans to those groups, which were economically backward. Through cooperative department, loans to the tune of Rs. 125 crores were disbursed to SHGs. The department officials were asked to increase the quantum of loan to Rs. 300 crores. During 2003-04, the Government had planned to form 10 lakh SHGs across the country and formed 7.5 lakh groups. Of this, over three lakh groups had been formed in Tamil Nadu alone. By providing loan to a group, 20 members of the group get benefited, the Collector said. The Project Officer (District Rural Development Agency), P. Selvarajan, the lead district manager, R. Muthaiyan, the General Manager of the District Industries Centre, Ramachandran, bankers and representatives of non-governmental organisations participated in the programme.
