CMP to include measures for workers

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JULY 8. The Minister for Large- and Medium-scale Industries, P.G.R. Sindhia, has said that the Government will include measures to address the problems of workers in the unorganised sector, particularly construction workers, in its Common Minimum Programme to be announced shortly. Mr. Sindhia was speaking at a public meeting organised by the Karnataka Kolegeri Nivasigala Samyuktha Sanghatane (KKNSS) and the Karnataka State Construction Workers' Central Union (KSCWCU) here today.

He said that there were an estimated two-crore workers, including farm labourers, in the unorganised sector. The Government was aware of their problems in the absence of laws for protection of their interests. The need to bring in legislation would be emphasised in the CMP, he added.

Responding to a memorandum submitted by the KKNSS, he said the Government would make efforts to provide employment to trained women masons for a minimum of 25 days a month in construction projects undertaken by both the public and private sectors.

Admitting that representation should be given to the KKNSS in the bodies for solving the problems, he said he would draw the Government's attention to it. By issuing possession certificates to slum dwellers and helping them construct houses of their own with adequate amenities such as water supply and sanitation, Bangalore could be made "slum free" within two years, he said.
