Final chance for Olympic hopefuls
CHENNAI,
JULY 8.
The inter-State athletics meet at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium from July 18 to 20 provides the final chance to those aspiring competitors to make the Olympic grade.
Coming as the event does less than a month before the Games in Athens from August 13, the significance of the meet cannot be underestimated.
Competitors from 25 states numbering over 900 are expected to figure in the three-day meet. Buoyed by the fact that as many as 19 have hit the qualifying marks (A and B), the AAFI, and the host, TAA, visualise the list to be enlarged before the last event on July 20.
Among the competitors to be watched keenly during the meet will be the discus thrower, US based star from Karnataka, Vikas Gawda.
Gawda has touched the A qualifying mark of 64.00 m. The meet is also to provide one more opportunity for shotputter Bahadur Singh.
