BANGALORE, JULY 8. Army Red has monopolised the Services athletics championship. And the 54th edition organised by the Indian Air Force, which concluded at the Sree Kanteerava stadium was no different as the champion aggregated a whopping 121 points. The second placed Army Green mustered 67 points while Indian Navy (56) and host Air Force (14) followed in that order. R. Seenivasan of Army Red, a 25-year-old Madurai lad despite a stagger at the start, breezed through the 100 metre clocking 10.3 seconds to emerge the fastest athlete of the meet. Kulwinder Singh improved upon his decathlon meet record of 6828 points set last year with an effort of 6940 points, here. The Navy quartet anchored by T.G. Ajesh and shot putter Jaiveer Singh, set the other new meet marks, on the concluding day. Jaiveer bettered his own mark of 18.18 metres with a 18.42 metres effort at the shot put ring. Ajesh, voted the `best athlete of the meet', for his double (200 m and 400m) provided a `golden' finish for Navy running superbly to ward off the challenge from Army Red to anchor his team to the 4x400 metres relay gold in a time of 3:12.5 seconds, erasing Army Red's 2002 mark of 3:14.5 seconds, in the process.
Team championship: 1. Army Red 121 pts, 2. Army Green 67 pts, 3. Navy 56 pts, 4. Air Force 14 pts.
