HYDERABAD,
JULY 8.
The Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge, P. Prameela Devi, on Thursday sentenced Guruprasad of Bangalore to seven years' rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs. 17,000 after he was found guilty of abetting his wife, Bhavani, to commit suicide after harassing her for additional dowry.
The Judge directed that Rs. 15,000 of the fine be paid as compensation to the victim's father. Bhavani was married to Guruprasad in October, 1999.
He allegedly began to harass Bhavani demanding additional dowry of Rs. 20 lakhs. Bhavani was sent back to her parents' house September 2000. Unable to bear the harassment, she jumped to death from the top of Indraprastha Apartments at Musheerabad on September 30, 2000.
