TIRUCHI, JULY 8. The new block of Hope Residential Care Centre for Mentally Retarded Adults was declared open at Guntur near here on Wednesday. The centre, which is a unit of the voluntary organisation, Anbalayam, would provide residential care to mentally retarded persons above the age of 16. Speaking on the occasion, Joseph Xavier, the District Rehabilitation Officer, stressed the need for such centres. Managing retarded persons is considered to be difficult job, he said, and commended Anbalayam for taking up the task. He also assured necessary support to the centre. T.K.S. Senthil Kumar, Director, Anbalayam, said the centre would focus on skill development and vocational training among the retarded so that they could be gainfully employed. The centre would also strive to find placements for retarded persons. He, however, called upon the society, industry and commercial establishments to come forward to provide suitable employment to the retarded. P. Krishnaswamy, the District Registrar, stressed the need for creating awareness in the society to extend support to the retarded. A. Krishnamoorthy, President, Anbalayam Consultative Committee; M. Thirisangu, President, Guntur village panchayat, M. Jenovah Arasi, Correspondent, Hope Residential Care Centre for Mentally Retarded Adults spoke on the occassion.
