Temperature

MADURAI, JULY 8. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 36.3 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 24.7 degrees Celsius. The airport received a rainfall of 1.5 mm, in the last 24 hours. It also recorded 2.8 mm of rainfall till 5.30 p.m. today.

Heavy rain

Heavy rains lashed several pockets of the city today. The sudden showers lasted for nearly an hour suspending the normal vehicular traffic.

The level in the Periyar dam today stood at 122.9 feet with storage of 3202 mcft. The inflow was 234 cusecs, with a discharge of 1488 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 45.80 feet with an inflow of 558 cusecs and a discharge of 930 cusecs.

Periyar received a rainfall of 4 mm followed by Tekkadi - 3, Gudalur and Kuppanampatti - 2 each and Andipatti - 1 mm.

Altercation in prison

Some Muslim prisoners had a tiff with the Central Prison staff here today. According to the police, over a dozen prisoners, all accused in the Imam Ali escape case, objected to women police constables frisking women visitors. The Superintendent, P. Munivelu, pacified them.

Earlier, all 36 accused in the Imam Ali case were produced before the Second Additional Sub-Court Judge, Elangovan. Charges were framed against the accused in the case.
