Monsoon: Central teams for 5 States

By Gargi Parsai

NEW DELHI, JULY 8. Concerned over the monsoon pattern and dry spells in parts of north-west India, the Agriculture Ministry has rushed teams to Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra for an assessment of their preparedness to meet the situation.

With the forecast of "low precipitation'' clouds over north-west India that is likely to blow over, the Ministry has asked its officers to advise the States on preparing contingency plans for the sowing of kharif (paddy).

The plan envisages short-duration sowing late sowing or alternative crops which can withstand delay/deficiency in monsoon.
