NEW DELHI, JULY 8. A Delhi police head constable has been suspended for allegedly extorting money from a person in lieu of "releasing" him. The victim had been illegally detained. The incident was reported from the Preet Vihar police station in East Delhi on Wednesday. According to the police, Head Constable Shiv Shankar, posted with the Preet Vihar police station in East Delhi, was suspended after a complaint against him was made by the brother of the victim, Ankit Gupta. The police had got a call saying that two persons were fighting over some issue at Preet Vihar. The call was entrusted to Shiv Shankar who reached the spot and found two persons, Ankit and a security guard, Ramesh, fighting over some issue. Both of them were then rounded up and brought to the police station. Shiv Shankar got Ankit medically examined and also conducted a search in which he managed to lay his hands on Rs. 3,600 which Ankit was carrying. In order to show some official action, Shiv Shankar made an entry and showed the money as recovered during search. However, Ankit was not formally detained under any section. Ankit then asked him to let him go. Shiv Shankar then allegedly demanded Rs. 3,000 from him. Ankit's brother, Anoop, brought the matter to the notice of senior officers following which Shiv Shankar was suspended. Ankit was let off only in the evening.
