Couple held for robbing jewellers

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JULY 8. A 48-year-old man and his wife have been arrested by the South Delhi police for allegedly robbing jewellers by using a unique modus operandi. The couple, along with their other family members, were involved in cheating jewellers in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.

According to the police, the Special Staff of the South Delhi police had received a tip-off about a couple likely to target a jewellery shop at Madangir in South Delhi today. A trap was laid by the Special Staff in charge, Inspector Rajender Singh, in Madangir. Around 9 a.m., the suspects appeared on the scene and were apprehended by the waiting police team. Some jewellery and Rs. 25,000 in cash were recovered from the accused, identified as Amarjeet Singh and Asha, both residents of Rohini in North-West Delhi.

During interrogation, the accused told the police that they had cheated jewellers in Bhatinda, Jallandhar, Ludhiana, Bahadurgarh, Faridabad, Rohini, Shahdara and a few market places in South Delhi. In fact, the sons, cousins, close relatives of the accused and even a paramour of one of the family members are said to be the part of the gang.

The gang used to operate in a group comprising two couples. After targeting a jewellery shop, preferably having only one salesman, one of the couples would walk in and demand that jewellery be shown to them. Evan as the salesman was busy in displaying various items, they used to signal the other couple to walk in. The couple would take advantage of the situation and steal the jewellery.
