NEW DELHI, JULY 8. In a bid to check the menace of motor vehicle thefts, the Crime Branch of the Delhi police has prepared a list of about 250 identified auto-lifters whose whereabouts are not known for the past sometime. The list, containing 243 names, was sent to all the nine districts about a week ago. It contains the names of auto-lifters who have been involved in at least three or more cases of auto-lifting in the recent past. They are untraced after they were released from jail. The police suspect that they may have resumed their activity. As per the list, in South Delhi, which has traditionally been most affected by the menace, there is no information about 53 such auto-lifters. North-East Delhi police will have to try and trace 51 auto-lifters who have gone "missing". North-West Delhi has been handed out a list of 49 such people. At the other end of the list is New Delhi, where only two auto-lifters are said to have been "missing". The North and Central Delhi police have to trace nine each. While the police of the largest district, South-West Delhi, will have to take care of 24 such cases, West Delhi police would have to look for 41 "missing" auto-lifters. The Crime and Railways unit have only three to look for, while in Airport (Palam) two auto-lifters have been evading the police eye since their release. Apart from targeting auto-lifters, the police have been trying to identify the places where the stolen vehicles were mostly being disposed of.
