Scholarships increased
Speaking at the USEFI here today, Mr. Mulford said the Rs. 3.25-crore increase in funding for the scholarly exchanges was due to growth in the Indo-U.S. relationship and recognition that exchanges in higher education have contributed greatly to both countries. The USEFI will be sending 81 Indian Fulbright scholars to the U.S. in 2004, an increase of 19 scholars over last year. Also, a total of 83 American scholars would be visiting India on Fulbright grants this year.
Man held for impersonation
The Crime Branch received a complaint from Deepak Tuli, who is into sale and purchase of old motorcycles at Jahangirpuri, alleging that a person claiming to be a Sub-Inspector with the Crime Branch and posted at the Police Headquarters took away a motorcycle from him without making the payment. The culprit wearing a police uniform identified himself as Rajbir Rana and also gave his visiting card to Tuli to convince him. He asked Tuli to show him some motorcycles, as he wanted to buy one. The culprit selected a motorcycle and took it away for a "trial ride" after which he did not return. After two days, the victim inquired from the Police Headquarters and found out that no person by the name Rajbir Rana worked there in the Crime Branch. Tuli then tried to contact him over his mobile phone, but would disconnect the call after hearing the latter's voice. Acting on the complaint, the police investigated the matter and traced the culprit to Mahindra Park at Jahangirpuri and arrested him. During interrogation, he identified himself as Salim, a resident of Mangolpuri. The police recovered a photograph showing him as a Sub-Inspector.
Two held with spurious liquor
During a routine check, a police team intercepted the Santro car and recovered the illegal liquor consignment. Two occupants, Vikas and Rashid Iqbal, were subsequently arrested. During interrogation, they disclosed they had bought the consignment from Bhiwadi in Rajasthan. Further investigations are on.
