dated July 10, 1954: Free movement of rice

The Government of India announced in New Delhi on July 8 that with effect from July 10 all controls on rice are being removed. Rice can now move freely from any part of the country to any other. The only food control that will still remain is the zonal control on the movement of wheat which, it is explained, is not because of any shortage of wheat but to prevent any loss which the Government might sustain in the disposal of a million tons of wheat contracted to buy under the international wheat agreement. The lifting of controls of all sorts, rationing, movement etc, marks an important and significant phase in the tackling of the food problem of the country which gave so much trouble in the past. It was thought that rice control would be the last to go because of the high price of the commodity and the limited external sources of supply.
