Rs. 100 crore sought for Kalasa-Banduri Nala project

By Our Staff Correspondent

The Janata Dal (United) leader, Basavaraj Bommai, addressing a farmers' rally at Naveelthirth (Malaprabha) dam site of Saundatti taluk on Thursday.

BELGAUM, JULY 9. The Kalasa-Banduri Nala Horata Samithi has demanded that the State Government make a provision of Rs. 100 crore in its budget proposals for 2004-05 to commence work on the long-pending Kalasa-Banduri Nala diversion project.

The Samithi will launch an agitation from August if the Government failed to concede to the demand of the people of the Malaprabha command area, said Basavaraj Bommai, MLC and senior Janata Dal (United) leader.

Addressing a rally of farmers, who had come from Belgaum, Dharwad, Gadag and Bagalkot districts and other parts falling under the Malaprabha command area, at Naveelthirth dam in Saundatti on Thursday, Mr. Bommai sought to remind the Government of the more than five-year-old struggle of the people from these districts demanding water for drinking and irrigational purposes.

The people were demanding the construction of a dam at the confluence of Kalasa-Banduri nala in Khanapur taluk and divert the water into the Malaprabha river/dam so that the irrigational requirements of the command area could be met. That apart, the project would also ease the drinking water scarcity in Hubli-Dharwad.

He said that a steering committee to lead agitation would be formed within 10 days. Those who addressed the rally included S.S.Patil, MLA, Vishwanath Mamani, MLA, farmers' leader Vijay Kulkarni and the Belgaum district Kalasa-Banduri Nala Horata Samithi president, Ashok Chandargi.
