Enforce Goondas Act: Janakiraman

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, JULY 9. The Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, R.V. Janakiraman (DMK), today urged the Rangasamy Government to enforce the Goondas Act.

Speaking on the motion of thanks to the Lt. Governor's address in the House, he said steps should be taken to ensure that the Act was enforced quickly to maintain law and order.

Mr. Janakiraman lauded the election authorities here for holding the Lok Sabha poll in a fair manner.

However, R. Siva (DMK), said a good chunk of voters were not able to exercise their franchise as their names were found deleted from the rolls.

He said that farmers should be encouraged to take up vegetable cultivation to earn revenue. At present, Pondicherry was getting vegetables worth several lakhs of rupees from Panruti and Villupuram.

He also wanted the Goondas Act enforced to prevent crime. Those perpetrating crimes should be handled sternly.

S.P. Sivakumar (DMK) said the people would always remember with gratitude the services rendered by the former Chief Secretary, R. Padmanabhan, who died in May. He said the Government could name the conference hall on the premises of the Chief Secretariat after Mr. Padmanabhan.

He requested the Chief Minister to tone up the Government-run AFT mills to create more job opportunities.

A.M. Krishnamoorthy (BJP) said the Lt. Governor's address did not contain any new schemes for the development of Pondicherry. Though there was great potential in the tourism sector, no action plan had been evolved. The fishing harbour project for Karaikal had been promised for last four years, but nothing had been done to establish it.

He said the Government should order an enquiry into the recent allegations made by a Congress legislator against N.N. Jha (the outgoing Lieutenant Governor), that the latter had indulged in phone-tapping.
