Speaker gives Telugu the go-ahead

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, JULY 9. Malladi Krishna Rao, the legislator from Yanam (an enclave of the Union Territory of Pondicherry in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh), who spoke in Telugu during the debate on the motion of thanks to the Lieutenant Governor's address in the Assembly, had some company: he was joined by the Speaker, M.D.R. Ramachandran and the BJP member, A.M. Krishnamoorthy, who too spoke in Telugu. (Telugu is the mother tongue of both the Speaker and Mr. Krishnamoorthy, though both speak Tamil normally).

When Mr. Rao sought clarifications on certain matters, the BJP member rose to say something. But the Speaker asked Mr. Krishnamoorthy not to intervene and told Mr. Rao to go ahead.

The Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, elected from Mahe, an enclave of Pondicherry in Kerala, told the House that the members were unable to understand what the three were saying. The Speaker said he was prepared to tutor the Minister if he was interested in learning Telugu, plunging the House into laughter.
