Objectionable goods seized from jails

PATNA, JULY 9. The State Government raided all the six jails in Patna district and recovered contraband goods following strong observations of Patna High court over crimes, specially abductions and extortions engineered from jails.

Official sources said here today that the raids were conducted simultaneously in Beur Central Jail, Phulwari jail and four sub-divisional jails of Patna district yesterday and contraband goods seized.

They said 17 pouches of ganja, cellular phones with chargers, CD player, audio cassettes, transistors, knives, irons, VCD, CDs, Rs 20,000 in cash, cooler, tape recorder, bottles of liquor and other objectionable materials were recovered.

Meanwhile, State Director General Of Police N Mishra conducted a high level meeting to frame a strategy to check crime, specially kidnapping for ransom and extortion.

Earlier, Patna High Court took cognizance of abductions and other crimes, including extortions, and directed the State Government to prepare a work plan to check such crimes.

The government was supposed to submit the work plan in the court today.

Dacoit killed

A member of the dacoit Puneet gang was killed in an encounter with police, while two other gang members fled away in Gandhipark area of Aligarh district today. State Home secretary Dipti Vilas told newsmen here today that police recovered cash worth Rs 90,000, a 9 mm pistol and a revolver from the dacoit identified as Pankaj. The gang had reportedly committed several heinous crimes. -- UNI

Nabbed with fake currency

A youth was arrested here and counterfeit currency, a note-making machine and other material seized from his possession. Furnishing details, Superintendent of Police Pawan Shrivastav said that the police action took place yesterday in Jehangirabad area where the accused Masood was found to be carrying 38 fake notes of Rs 100 denomination each. ``Interrogation is in progress and we are attempting to ascertain where he got the machine and other material,'' the officer added.
