Govt. schools to get back power

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JULY 9. North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL) has agreed to restore power supply to all government schools whose electricity connections were disconnected following non-payment of bills. The Directorate of Education has agreed to pay 60 per cent of the bills and the pending amount would be paid after settlement of the pending disputes.

Giving this information here today, the Education Minister, Arvinder Singh Lovely, said that of the total bill of Rs. 2.6 crores, the State Education Department had decided to pay 60 per cent money and the rest of the bills would also be taken care of after senior officials of NDPL and the Education Department sit across the table and work out the averages within the next three months. A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting held in the Ministers chamber and attended by the NDPL CEO, Anil Sardana, and the Director of Education, Rajinder Kumar.

Mr. Lovely said the disconnection of power supply to schools had occurred due to some communication gap and assured that such a thing would not take place again. He said there was no attempt on the part of the Department to avoid paying the power bills and cause suffering to the students. He said he had directed the officials to ensure that no such thing takes place in future.

On the other hand, Mr. Lovely said a complete ban has been imposed on construction of semi pucca structure (SPS) for government schools and instead the Government has decided to opt for porta cabins that are sturdier and have a longer life. The porta cabins will be set up in various schools where concrete structures are not available but there will be no SPS construction now, he added. The Education Minister said the Government was studying various options for making schools comfortable for students and the porta cabin proposal was one of the major steps in this regard. Mr. Lovely said a lot of ground work had been done in this connection and work on setting up these cabins was expected to begin within the next two to three months.

The Education Minister said efforts were made to ensure the dividends of programmes like the National Literacy Mission percolate down to the grassroot level and benefit the targeted groups. The Department is also focusing on the need to ensure education from the primary level to the girl child and some initiative in this regard is being worked out.
