`Desilting only on papers'

NEW DELHI JULY 9. The Leader of Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Subhash Arya, today alleged that the MCD has failed to complete desilting of all drains before the onset of the monsoon.

"Desilting of drains has been done only on papers. The drains at Subhash Nagar, Ramesh Nagar and Gokulpuri bear ample testimony to the fact that desilting of drains have not been carried at all," Mr. Arya alleged.

Releasing pictures of some of the drains taken by him on Wednesday, Mr. Arya claimed that people were walking across the drain, which has now filled with rubbish.

"The situation is very bad in several areas including the entire trans-Yamuna area, the Walled City and Central Delhi," he alleged.

Film on Vrindavan widows

NEW DELHI JULY 9. To highlight their plight, the Guild of Service will screen a film on the lives of widows in Vrindavan in the Capital on Saturday. Directed by Dharan Mandrayar, "White Rainbow'' is the story of four remarkable women and their journey from the depths of despair to hope.

Announcing this here today, the chairperson the Guild of Service, Mohini Giri, said the Guild was determined to empower widows to enable them to live their lives with dignity.

Unique exhibition

NEW DELHI JULY 9. The Fortis Hospitals, a Ranbaxy promoter group company, organised a unique exhibition aimed at familiarising people with the functioning of a hospital. The exhibition, organised at its Noida facility, was inaugurated by well-known orthopaedic surgeon, Abbott.

The exhibition showcased various equipments used in hospitals. Doctors and paramedical staff not only explained the functioning of MRI, X-Ray, CT Scan, operation theatres and laboratories, but also used visual aids like posters and slides while answering queries of people who visited the exhibition. A free counselling on diet and free check-ups of blood sugar and blood pressure were also conducted.

Speaking n the occasion, the Vice-President (Operations) of the Fortis Healthcare, Alok Roy, said, "The exhibition is our humble attempt at sharing a community resource like a hospital with the public. With this exhibition we endeavour to help people see hospitals in a new light and truly understand how a hospital functions."

Scheme for elders welcomed

NEW DELHI JULY 9. HelpAge India, a non-government organisation, has welcomed the introduction of the "Senior Citizens Savings Scheme" in the Union Budget that offers a higher rate of interest of nine per cent to senior citizens. The NGO has termed it as "a step in the right direction towards the welfare of senior citizens of the country".

In a statement issued today, the president of HelpAge India, M.M. Sabharwal, said, "A majority of the senior citizens depend on the interest earned from their savings to meet their daily expenses. Schemes like the proposed one on the senior citizens savings will provide the elderly people with the much-needed additional income to cope with the rising cost of living. We are pleased to see the Government's support towards this worthy cause."

Tie-up for special children

NEW DELHI JULY 9. To train school teachers on disability and rehabilitation for speeding up the inclusion of "special children" in general schools, the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) today joined hands with the National Council of Teacher Education to work together in this direction.

An RCI statement said one of the important objectives of the collaboration between the two statutory bodies was to strengthen the education system by training school teachers and creating a platform for the inclusion of special children so that the ultimate goal of creating one-school system for all children could be reached.

"With this collaboration, the RCI aims to meet the demand for special educators in general schools across the country. The well-established infrastructure for teachers training in our country could be helpful to give a boost to special education," said the RCI Chairman, H.P.S. Ahluwalia.
