Kakatiya

eligibility test

WARANGAL: As many as 8,529 candidates passed the degree eligibility test conducted by the School of Distance Learning and Continuing Education (SDLCE) of Kakatiya University. According to a press release, a total of 9,668 candidates registered their names while 9,018 appeared for the test. Of them, 8,529 passed the test held on June 27. The results were announced in a record time of 11 days.

Meet on traffic

problems ADILABAD: The Adilabad DSP, Hanmanth Rao, held a coordination meeting with autorickshaw and passenger jeep drivers on Friday at Ambedkar Bhavan here to thrash out traffic problem. The drivers were told not to overload their vehicles and asked to wear uniform. A need was felt for such a meeting keeping in view the increasing number of accidents. The incharge RTO, Kishore Babu, Traffic CI, William, SI Satyanarayana, and representatives of local businessmen also attended.

Cultural programme

ADILABAD: The Adilabad unit of the Information and Public Relations Department on Friday organised a cultural programme at Gudihatnoor mandal headquarter village to discourage farmers from committing suicide. The cultural programme featuring a playlet, ballet and dance was conducted at the weekly shandy by the cultural troupe of the District Public Relations office. The Adilabad DPRO, D. S. Jagan, said the weekly shandy attracted a large number of farmers from all the surrounding villages. The playlets and ballets depicted the plight of the farmer families where the breadwinner had committed suicide.

Electrocuted

CUDDAPAH: A 36-year-old man, Maana Ramanaiah, was electrocuted when an electric line from a transformer snapped and fell on him in Nagarajupalle in Ramapuram mandal last night. The Ramapuram police registered a case and shifted the body for post-mortem to Rayachoti Government hospital.

Meanwhile, a married woman, Suhasini (20), died of electric shock while ironing clothes in Nagapatnam village in Khajipet mandal on Friday.

Woman killed

CUDDAPAH: A mentally imbalanced person, A. Easwara Reddy, allegedly stabbed his wife, Subbalakshmamma (32) to death, when she was sweeping the foreyard of her house in Hastavaram Kothapalle village in Rajampet mandal on Friday morning. Easwara Reddy returned home two days ago after being treated by a psychiatrist at Tirupati, according to the police.

Training for

farmers

MADANAPALLE: A four-day training was given to small and marginal farmers in improving production, especially groundnut, here from March 3 to 7. Officers S. Balaji Rao and K. Sobha Rani gave the training, the ecology unit coordinator, G. M. Chandramohan, said. Farmers from Chinnappa Reddygaripalle, Eguvachennamarri and Thuguvaripalle, members of Sreevenkateswara rythu sangh, Sree Srinivasa Susthira Vyavasaya Sangh and Chaithanya Susthira Vyavasaya Sangh attended the programme.

Insurance staff

appeal

NELLORE: Functionaries of the Insurance Corporation Employees' Union, Nellore division, have opposed some proposals in the Union Budget.

In a telegram to the Finance Minister, sent on Friday, the union protested against increase in foreign direct investments from 26 per cent to 49 per cent in the insurance sector and opposed the service tax proposal on life insurance premiums.

Textbook `lapse' corrected

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Academy has suspended the sale of Intermediate Civics II English medium textbook as the name of B.R. Ambedkar did not find a mention among those who drafted the Constitution. The academy, which had regretted the inadvertent lapse, had taken steps for printing a new set of books after incorporating the correction and released the textbook in market on July 5, the academy Director, A. Manjulatha, said. The Director while thanking those who had brought the lapse to their notice, however, said there was no lapse in Telugu medium Civics-II textbook and in other chapters related to the services of Dr. Ambedkar in both English and Telugu medium Civics textbooks.

Illegal LPG racket busted

ANANTAPUR: The I Town police busted a racket of illegal cooking gas business and arrested four persons allegedly involved in it. Of the arrested, two persons were delivery boys of State-owned HP Gas. According to the police, the Super Gas agent, Hariprasad, his associate, Srinivasa Yadav alias Raju, with the connivance of two HP Gas delivery boys -- Srinivasulu and Babji -- were making huge profits by illegally filling empty Super Gas cylinders with HP Gas after purchasing GP Gas cylinders by paying some commission to the delivery boys. The police seized 20 HP Gas cylinders and seven Super Gas cylinders.

Finance Minister to head panel

HYDERABAD: The Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, will head a committee to draft a comprehensive policy for the overall development of the handlooms sector in the State. The committee members -- Puli Veeranna, N. Hanumantha Rao, Mohan Reddy and J. Ramaiah (MLAs) -- told reporters in the Assembly lobbies on Friday that recommendations would be submitted to the Government within a month. They complimented the Centre for scrapping the 9.2 per cent excise duty on hankers in the budget.

ENC farewell for Navy chief

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Eastern Naval Command (ENC) on Friday bade a fond farewell to the Chief of the Naval Staff, Madhvendra Singh, who is retiring on July 31. Admiral Singh, who took over as Navy chief on December 30, 2001, is retiring after 41 years of service. An impressive ceremonial parade, attended by Flag Officers, the Project Director of the shipbuilding centre, the Admiral Superintendent of the Naval Dockyard, the ENC Chief of Staff and the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, marked the occasion at the INS Circars Parade ground. The Admiral was accorded a 50-man guard of honour on arrival. In another traditional gesture, he was ceremonially pulled in a jeep by Flag Officers and Commanding Officers. Addressing them, the Naval chief stressed on the need to keep the Navy strong and powerful.

No injustice for State: Minister

HYDERABAD: The Agriculture Minister, N. Raghuveera Reddy, on Friday said no injustice had been done to the State either in the Railway budget or the Union budget. "There is no doubt that the Union budget is very good. We have not asked for any special package but we are getting everything we want," he said. He was responding to a zero hour mention by Y. Ramakrishnudu, former Finance Minister, regretting that Congress-led Governments at the Centre and State had done injustice to the State.

MLA's poser on farm officers

HYDERABAD: The Congress MLA, Ch. Ramakrishna Reddy, on Friday pointed out that there were 400 vacancies of the posts of Agriculture Officers in mandals. He said 110 officials did not have any powers as they were on contract basis. He sought to know from the Agriculture Minister, N. Raghuveera Reddy, whether there was an Agriculture Officer in his native Madakasira mandal in Anantapur district. Accepting the suggestion, Mr. Raghuveera Reddy said action would be taken.

Raw deal for BCs alleged

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association has charged the Centre with neglecting the interests of BCs in the budget. R. Krishnaiah, president, in a statement issued here on Friday, said there were no schemes for the betterment of BCs, who constitute 56 per cent of the population. Neither were there any financial benefits.

Tension prevails in villages

KURNOOL: Tension prevailed at Vadlaramapuram, near Atmakur, and Kottalacheruvu villages following heavy presence of the police and naxalites. The police were camping at Vadlaramapuram following reports that naxalites conducted a gram sabha two days ago. When villagers refused to cooperate with them, naxalites moved to nearby Indireswaram and conducted a meeting there.

Woman naxal surrenders

KARIMNAGAR: A naxalite of the Communist Party of United States of India (CPUSI) Veeranna faction, Kapula Padma (27), surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Rajiv Ratan, here on Friday. Padma said she was disillusioned with the party ideology. She surrendered in 1999 before the Warangal police but joined the Janashakti in 2000.

Lorry owner murdered

ONGOLE: A lorry owner, Pasam Veerabhadrudu (38), was hacked to death allegedly by his rivals in public view at Cumbum town on Friday. The accused persons along with 12 others arrived in a lorry when the victim was conversing with his friends at the lorry owners' association office. After chasing Veerabhadrudu to a distance, they inflicted stab injuries on him and later lynched him with a big boulder to death. Previous enmity is said to be the reason for his murder.

Bears attack villager

KURNOOL: A person, Venkateswarlu, of Pathabanakacharla village in Pamulapadu mandal of Kurnool district was injured when bears attacked him in the forest on Friday. According to reports, three bears attacked him when he was going on a bicycle. He scaled a tree to escape but the animals followed him. However, under the weight of the animals, the tree branch came off resulting in the fall of bears. They fled the spot and Venkateswarlu was shifted to a hospital at Atmakur in unconscious state.
