STC building remains without power

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JULY 9. For the second consecutive day today, over half-a-dozen offices in the 23-storey Jawahar Vyapaar Bhawan on Janpath had to remain without power and water after the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) disconnected the supply on Thursday following an order from the Delhi Fire Service. The disconnection was ordered as the State Trading Corporation, which owns that building, failed to meet fire-fighting norms after a notice was served on it over a week ago.

As a result, employees of several government offices including that of the Cottage Emporium, a major tourist attraction in the Capital, and the Special Protection Group (SPG) had to remain without power and water. The other government departments having their offices in the building include the Commerce Department, the Handicraft and Handloom Export Corporation, and the 12th Finance Commission.

According to the Chief Fire Officer, R.C. Sharma, on June 15, a minor fire broke out in the building. On inspection, it was found that certain crucial fire-fighting equipment including fire pump, sprinklers and public announcement system were not functioning.

"We issued a 10-day notice them asking them to install all fire-fighting equipments till 23 June. But on inspection it was found that the State Trading Corporation authorities had failed to comply with the order. So we asked the NDMC to disconnect water and power connections of the building," he informed. And for the past two days, employees have been working under candle lights even during the day. Non-availability of water also caused a serious problem not only to the employees but also to tourists visiting the Cottage Emporium. Official work had been badly affected due to the disconnection.

Sources said the only option with the State Trading Corporation was to move court to seek a stay order and request re-connection of water and power supply.
