Amendment sought to BC Commission Act
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD,
JULY 10.
The MP and secretary of the All India Congress Committee, V. Hanumantha Rao, has appealed to the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to amend the Backward Classes Commission Act to facilitate appointment of an expert belonging to Backward Class community as chairman of the Commission.
In a statement, he said the Act at present allowed appointment of a sitting or retired judge of High Court or the Supreme Court as Chairman, which was resulting in delay of submission of report. The best example was the previous Commission headed by K. S. Puttuswamy. He could not give any report on representations made by poor Backward Class communities, during his tenure of nine years.
If the Act was amended and an authority on Backward Classes appointed as chairman, it would benefit poor BCs. He also suggested making it mandatory to submit the report in a stipulated period and reducing the term of the Commission from three to two years. He cited the examples of the Ananta Raman Commission and the Murlidhara Rao Commission that had presented their reports within the time frame.
