MADURAI, JULY 10. In a swift operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) last night picked up a former printing press owner at Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district in connection with the multicrore stamp paper scam. Following specific information, a team swooped down on a sweet stall and took its owner, whose name was given as Mahaboob John, into custody. Two suspected agents are said to be absconding. The accused was taken to Bangalore for interrogation, police sources said. The CBI sleuths had kept track of the accused for nearly a month. Though the role played by Mahaboob John and his associates was not clear, it was alleged that they "gave finishing touches and cleared the final design of the fake stamp papers before they were printed." "The assistance of the local police was not sought in last night's operation," a top police official told The Hindu today.
Focus shifts to
Tamil Nadu
With the arrest of three officials, including a Deputy Inspector-General of Police, the focus of the Telgi stamp paper scam appears to have shifted to Tamil Nadu. The CBI sources said a high-level team from the agency's headquarters was expected to arrive in Chennai and Madurai next week for further investigations. Based on confessions made by the three officials, investigators are likely to pick some more suspects from different parts of the State.
