Visakhapatnam

VISAKHAPATNAM, JULY 10. Two special police parties were being formed to prevent illegal quarrying of semi-precious stones in Golugonda and other mandals in the district, the Superintendent of Police, Sanjay Kumar Jain, said here on Saturday. The monsoon season would always see a spurt in illegal mining of precious stones in Golugonda and surrounding areas with the merchants operating from Narsipatnam. The increased activity was leading to clashes between the merchants and the villagers who are engaged by them for diggings. Also the trenches created while digging for semi-precious stones would cave in due to rains leading to death of labourers. Special parties were being formed to eliminate such problems, Mr. Jain said at the half-yearly crime review meeting. The special parties would be stationed at the problem areas for one month and conduct combing operations to prevent illegal quarrying. They would seize the digging material and send them away from the area. However, Mr. Jain told the police personnel to deal gently with the villagers engaged for digging but be firm with the merchants. Cases under APCOCA could be booked against the merchants if necessary, he said. The SP also wanted the cases of deaths and injuries at the quarries to be investigated. Help could be sought from other Government departments in this regard, he said. Regarding traffic problem, he suggested forming traffic advisory committees at Anakapalle and Narsipatnam to prevent accidents and to regulate traffic. On the crime aspect, the SP wanted data banks to be formed at every Circle office with details of old and new criminals. The convicts released from prisons should be kept under watch.
