J&K Minister's son arrested for eve-teasing

By Luv Puri

JAMMU, JULY 10. The arrest of the son of a Cabinet Minister in the Jammu and Kashmir Government on a charge of eve-teasing has become a major political issue with the Opposition alleging that women as the State are no longer safe under the present dispensation.

Jatinder Kumar, son of the son of the Social Welfare Minister, Mula Ram, was arrested after a 16-year-old girl complained that he was harassing her. Jatinder allegedly chased the girl in an official Bolero jeep.

As the news of the incident spread, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists led by Ashok Khajuria staged protests in various parts of the city. They demanded action against the accused.

On his part, Mr. Mula Ram said he suspected a political conspiracy. Talking to The Hindu , he said: ``I have doubts whether my son was involved in the incident. It looks like a political conspiracy to defame me and the Congress, to which I belong.'' However, he was quick to add that if the charges against is son were proved, he would take corrective measures so that such incidents did not recur.
