`Exempt lorries from toll'

By Our Staff Reporter

NAMAKKAL, JULY 11. The State Lorry Owners' Federation has urged the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, to exempt lorries from paying toll in various parts of the country.

In a memorandum to the Minister, the president of the Federation, P. Sengodan, said that the lorry owners were already paying road tax and the toll amounts collected in various parts far exceeded even the road tax.

Moreover in several states, toll collectors demanded and got more than the stipulated amount from lorries from outside those states using "force of threat by goondas,'' the memorandum said.

Also the cess on diesel, low resale value for lorries, increasing number of vehicles, unfair trade practices and the frequent revision of diesel prices, had added to the woes of the lorry owners.

Mr. Sengodan said the Finance Minister must come forward to exempt lorries from paying toll on highways and spare diesel from frequent price revisions.

The Karur Taluk Lorry Owners' Association has also urged the Finance Minister to exempt diesel from frequent price revision.

The proposal to hike diesel price up to Rs. 3.50 a year and the service tax regime for the transport sector should be reconsidered, the Association president, K. Raju, said here today.
