RAJAHMUNDRY, JULY 11. The Minister for Roads and Buildings, Jakkampudi Ramamohana Rao, on Sunday charged the Telugu Desam with completely derailing the Government machinery during its nine-year rule. It would take at least six months to bring it back on to the track, he said. The Minister was reacting to the charge of the former Finance Minister, Yenamala Ramakrishnudu, who, while criticising the Budget, said the Congress Government had failed to keep its promises made during elections. Mr. Ramamohana Rao said it was just two months since the Congress assumed office. Immediately after taking the charge, the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, announced waiver of power arrears of Rs. 1,100 crores and power subsidy to the tune of Rs. 450 crores. Instead of appreciating such a prompt action, TDP leaders were indulging in criticism. Finding everything in the mess, the Chief Minister sought the services of experts in different fields and set up committees to study the situation and suggest remedial measures, Mr. Ramamohana Rao said, adding that experts were asked to submit reports within a month so that prompt action could be initiated. He attributed farmers' suicide to the hardship that had compounded during the TDP regime. Accusing TDP leaders of indulging in corrupt practices, he said the party initiated no action against such leaders. He cited `irregularities' in the execution of Food-for-work programme in Samapara Assembly constituency where the husband of the then MLA was suspended from the party only to be readmitted later. Mr. Ramamohana Rao said that the Chief Minister would hold a meeting of MLAs from the district in Hyderabad on Monday to discuss various issues. Speedy execution of irrigation projects like the Pushkaram LI scheme, Surampalem and Bhupathipalem lift irrigation scheme, setting up of a ship-breaking unit at Kakinada port, establishment of Police Commissionerate in Rajahmundry, modernisation of the Venkatanagaram pumping scheme and other issues would be discussed at the meeting, he said.
