Five killed in Herat blast

Kabul: A bomb explosion in the western Afghan city of Herat killed up to five persons and injured at least 10 others on Sunday, police said. Abdul Wahid Tawaqali, the deputy provincial intelligence chief, said the blast happened on a main road near the gate of a police station in the city. The Herat police chief, Ziauedin Mamodi, said five people were killed and 10 injured, three seriously, and that a young boy was among the dead. He said a time-bomb exploded in a pile of garbage at the side of the road. He said the police station was located on the upper storey of the building, with shops on the ground floor. It was not immediately possible to reconcile the differing accounts. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast. The explosion came as a ceremony was held elsewhere in Herat on Sunday to mark the start of disarmament of militia forces there under a U.N.-backed programme. The U.N. spokesman, Manoel de Almeida e Silva, said the United Nations had heard reports of the explosion, but had no details. — AP
