ANANTAPUR, JULY 11. Speakers at the 16th State convention of AP Teachers' Federation (APTF) here stressed the need for implementation of a democratic education system. They expressed concern over the iron grip of the "market mafia" on education. On the second day of the meet today the speakers said education had become a commodity and it was increasing the disparities in the society instead of bringing about social equality. G. Haragopal of Hyderabad Central University said that alleviating social and economic disparities was long redundant as a political goal and instead politicos were giving preference for economic progress. As a result, the disparities were widening further, he observed. Stating that education was the responsibility of the Government he stressed the need for bridging the gap between rural and urban areas. Abdul Noor Basha of Nagarjuna University said that the education sector was unable to generate sufficient employment opportunities due to policies of the Government. B. Ramesh Babu urged the teachers to inculcate human and social values among the students from primary level. Later, the teachers took out a massive rally through the main streets of the town.
